| THE KILL DEVIL HILLS (WA) (single launch) with Nathan Hollywood (album launch) with Felicity Groom (WA) –SOLD OUT! |
 |
Sat 10 May (Doors 8.30) (Sold Out!)
It’s been almost a year since the rambling, 6 piece swamp rock darlings of the wild west – the Kill Devil Hills- played shows on the East Coast. In that time, they toured to Canada and the US, won a handful more WAMi awards, released their second album to rave reviews in Europe and recorded a song especially for this trip. The song is called ‘Hungry and Down’ and will be available on limited edition 7” vinyl only at the show! The Kill Devil Hills formed in early 2003 as a cowpunk trio and have mutated into a sonic stew of rock, folk, gospel, blues and punk, carving out their own weird take on the great Australian tradition of swamp music. They’ve released 2 albums and now a single, and their blistering live shows are quite simply, not to be missed!

Firekites is a Newcastle emerged collective revolving around the acoustic musings of Tim Mcphee (The Instant) and Rod Smith. Tucked away for the past two years, Firekites have been persistently self-recording their first musical offering – debut LP, ‘The Bowery’. Expanding on initial acoustic ideas, Tim & Rod called on long-time friends Jane Tyrrell (The Herd), Jason Tampake (Josh Pyke) & Matt Blackman (Charge Group/Purplene) to explore their sound in the abandoned iconic coffee-house/dance hall, ‘The Bowery’. The remainder of the record was crafted in collaboration with Richard Pike (Pivot), who added synth elements and electronic beats. With the patient production of indie impresario, Wayne Connolly (Belles Will Ring, You Am I, The Vines, 78 Saab), ten measured tracks take their place on the debut due out on 26 April 2008 through Spunk!

The album is as stunning as it is embracing - a warm romance of an album where bare folk meets with dreamy bright pop songs and lilting back-porch dirges. Pastoral and nautical imagery and succinct observations - from the everyday to the fantastic - are delivered with Holly’s distinctive phrasing and lyrical twists and turns.

| STU HAMM SOLO CLINIC (USA) with ELECTRIC MARY (late set) |

Wed 2 Jul (Doors 7.30) Tickets: $13+bf ($15 at the door if still available) Tickets available from NSC Box Office Monday - Saturday 2.00 - 6.00pm (301 High St, Northcote), on 9486 1677 and online here.
Stu has worked with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani extensively and is now touring his solo bass clinic performance. Extending the non-traditional function of the electric bass previously revolutionized by Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke in the ‘70’s, Hamm helped to reshape the contemporary concept of the bass guitar as an unaccompanied instrument with the utilization of polyphonic, two-handed tapping, slapping and popping techniques, chords, and harmonics. Although Hamm certainly wasn’t the first bass player to debut during the 1980’s and employ an unorthodox approach to playing the electric bass, he was undoubtedly at the forefront of his generation who effectively fused the application of these unconventional techniques. The clinic will feature Rick Evensand (Soilwork, Chimera) and Pete Robinson (Electric Mary, Sneak, Russell Morris band).

| LAURA MARLING (UK) with special guest |
 |
Wed 6 Aug (Doors 8.30) Tickets: $30+bf on sale Fri 23 May (TBA at the door if still available)
Hearing Laura Marling sing, it is hard to believe she’s just eighteen years old. Having been compared to her folk heroes Joni Mitchell and Carole King, as well as Kate Bush, her deft, cool phrasing is suggestive of someone who has a story to tell, and knows how to tell it. Similarly, Marling’s lyrics run deep; there is love and romance (of course), but Marling also explores loss, grief and mental illness with startling insight. Her debut album ‘Alas I Cannot Swim’ has set critics and fans across the world whispering her praises.
